ROLE:

The focus of this role is to provide environmental consultancy services to our clients in the industrial, commercial, public and third sectors.

You will work closely with senior management to develop new, and manage existing, products and services to assist customers with their environmental management and sustainability disclosure.

If you join the team as our Environmental Consultant, you will be responsible for developing and executing a robust but stretching programme of product development to support customers to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and comply with mandatory and voluntary sectoral reporting and target requirements including ISO14001. We do a lot of work with the public and third sectors so you may also be working on NHS Green Plans, ESG disclosure for social housing and Higher Education Sustainability Leaders reports.

The role offers a diverse range of activities and will involve both an understanding of technical report writing and the importance of linking sustainability activities to, whilst not detracting from, organisational frontline priorities.

SKILLS:

The person coming into this role will be a critical part of a small team serving as a force for good by encouraging customers and stakeholders to adopt, practise and to measure and report against environmentally and socially conscious operating procedures. You will provide timely, focused and professional support and work with customers on all areas of sustainability reporting, with support from specialists in carbon and energy management.

Experience of environmental management and reporting is essential although the taxonomy you’ve reported against could be any of ISO14001, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sector Reporting Standard for ESG in Social Housing, Public Sector Carbon Reduction Programmes, NHS Green Plans, Greening Government Commitments or similar.

You must have:

  • Demonstrable experience within the field of environmental management or sustainability reporting
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation in the UK, particularly relating to energy and carbon, environmental permitting, waste management and biodiversity/wildlife protection.
  • Proven technical ability within your primary pillar of sustainability (environmental, social or economic)
  • Ability to help clients embed environmental and sustainability requirements to deliver real impact
  • Proven ability to manage and lead complex projects
  • Good report writing, IT and communication skills

Desirable experience:

  • Experience aligning sustainability reports to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Experience in carrying out or preparing for ISO 14001 Audits
  • Working knowledge of ISO20400
  • Working knowledge of carbon reporting standards, such as the Science Based Targets initiative and CDP
  • Working knowledge of waste management auditing and waste compliance documentation

The successful candidate will be an analytical thinker who can demonstrate the ability to successfully deliver and manage customer-facing projects.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The development and delivery of products and services, especially around sustainability reporting. This to be delivered in line with national policy objectives, sectoral initiatives and recognised standards for environmental management and sustainability.
  • Overseeing the creation and distribution of customers’ sustainability disclosures and estates-related reports including, but not limited to Green Plans, Social Housing ESG disclosure standards, Higher Education Sustainability Leaders and any future public sector sustainability measurement and reporting requirements that may arise.
  • Overseeing the creation and management of ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • To work alongside the customer account management team to deliver support and advice to customers on environmental and sustainability matters and provide a responsive, pro-active carbon management and sustainable procurement service.
  • To liaise with customers about matters pertaining to environmental management and compliance, highlighting any business risks or opportunities to the senior management team.
  • To upload and update information in our Customer Relationship Management software (Sugar), providing reports and information.
  • Ensuring services are delivered in line with relevant legislation and Inspired policies including those relating to Social Value, Equality and Diversity, Customer Service and Health and Safety.
  • To undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time that reasonably fall within the scope and grade of the post.
  • Read and comply with the company Health & Safety Policy; taking reasonable care for the Health & Safety of themselves and others; co-operate with managers and other employees in fulfilling our objectives and statutory duties.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience within the field of environmental management or sustainability reporting
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation in the UK, particularly relating to the built environment
  • Proven technical ability within your primary pillar of sustainability (environmental, social or economic)
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment liaising with colleagues across a range of different teams
  • Experience providing advice and information to informed and casual stakeholders on complex matters
  • Proven ability to manage and lead complex projects
  • Good report writing, IT and communication skills

Desirable

  • Membership of the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA) or similar professional body. IEMA Lead Assessor status would also be helpful.
  • Knowledge of environmental management including the ISO14001 standard with experience carrying out or preparing for Environmental Audits
  • Experience aligning disclosures to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Working knowledge of sustainable procurement and social value standards including ISO20400 and the Social Value Act.
  • Working knowledge of carbon reporting standards, such as the Science Based Targets initiative and CDP
  • Working knowledge of waste management auditing and waste compliance documentation
  • Experience using customer relationship management (CRM) software, ideally Sugar CRM

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This is a multi-faceted role working with colleagues across a range of disciplines including procurement, education, marketing, account management and energy optimisation.

The post holder will be expected to do their job efficiently and contribute to the continuous improvement culture and values of Inspired PLC.
